I volunteered for the Signs Team for Around The Bay last year because BV wrote to my Club requesting volunteers as they could not source enough through their own membership base. I intend to volunteer again this year.
I therefore re-iterate that most of the participants in the BV forums “don’t give a rats about the volunteers as long as somebody else does the job”
I direct your attention to the volume of posts on the Volunteers forum compared to say when Parawolf cycled into the back of a parked car.
And I direct all your attentions to the fact that I was referring to the members of the Forum not being interested in the Volunteers thread and not suggesting that volunteers were not necessary or didn’t do a good job.
Can’t you understand simple English when you read it?
I was suggesting that Earl’s account of a day in the life of a Volunteer may have given him some satisfaction in writing it but the majority of the participants in the BV forums really don’t give a rats about it, as is evidenced by the lack of responses until I posted, whereupon you started to attack me, not support Earl.
I am unlikely to trouble the WARBY’s on any future BV rides because:
I much prefer to ride and camp in small groups and am unlikely to participate in any of the rides and even should I so participate;
I have been cycling for about eight years longer than Earl and have performed all my own bike maintenance during that time.
For the benefit of JugglingOgre who may or may not be a CFA volunteer, I was an adult leader in the Scout Association for seventeen years so I do have runs on the board in the volunteering game.
A few groveling apologies would be in order, apart from Earl, as I was taking the piss out of him!
So you 'volunteered' because your club felt obligated to assist, if it is a cycling club, why shouldn't they, isn't all about promoting cycling after all?
It's pretty hard to find 480 vollies from the resources of BV's membership alone, other sources need to be found.
Signs is a very important role and has a interesting story to it, too bad you can't share your experiences.
If the comments were just to annoy Earl then maybe you can start another topic or PM him and discuss those issues there, I think it was unfair to mimimise the involvement of vollies, whether you meant it or not.
Many people lurk on these forums, so it's difficult to say how many people do give a 'rats' but I dare say most do in regards to the efforts of vollies on events, in the office, and campaigning, just have a bit of respect!
