On the 1990 GVBR a fellow loon completed the ride on a Penny Farthing.....
Most folks I know who ask me about the rides I am planning on going on think I am a loon for even contemplating spending 5 or so hours a day in saddle for 9 or 10 days.
I think that they are just jealous because it is a great time to be had and they are stuck behind a desk or in some other mundane situation that they can't seem to break themselves free of. They would rather grouse at someone out having a go and having fun doing it than be a part of it.
I had great times on the big ride I did. I AM doing another big ride this year.
Sure the ride is expensive, but then what other almost fully catered for holiday isn't expensive? Sure you can be caught in the rain, but I have done that bushwalking and shopping!
Bicycle VIC is now running the NSW ride so why not give them a go? Let them have thier chance rather than bagging them out for something that was not in thier control when BNSW was running the NSW rides?
Pack the right gear, take some snacks for breaks etc and stop in the towns along the way if you need to refuel/carboload/hide from the weather.
It isn't a race and as long as you get out fairly early you can more than take your time to get to the evening destination before the route closes and support rolls past you.
You will only take out of the rides what you want to take with you. If you go looking for a hard slog that is just too much effort then it will be a slog that you won't want to do again. If you go in with enthusiasm and comittment to complete the ride rain, hail, sleet, snow, blazing sunshine, scorching heat...you name it the aussie environment can throw it all at us at any time in the southern states, grinning like an idiot whooping at the downhills, carboloading at the spokes bar, joining in the fun at the talent show and all in all having fun....then you WILL have fun.
Anyways, I'm gonna have fun. Sadly not on this ride as I can only afford one big ride this year but you never know about next year
but on the 2008 GVBR. A little rain or cold aint gonna wreck my spirits!
Keep on pedaling you guys on the NSW ride. I envy you all!!!!!!!
