The route profiles posted recently look a bit daunting!
Bruce, I thought the route profiles were daunting too but it's all smoke and mirrors. Once you accept that the abscissa is two orders of magnitude greater than the ordinate it translates less like riding up a cliff face.
Had the opportunity to drive Shannon to Nannup (Days 4 and 6) last weekend armed with the route profile. The long climbs on day 4 are out of the Shannon and Warren river valleys and seemed quite do-able. The profile is remarkably accurate when you compare it to the topography travelled.
The ride into Nannup is very steep downhill but a sensational view over the Blackwood River Valley. Everything else is undulating with uphills balanced by breaks downhill or on the level.
For a long weekend, the road was pretty quiet and off the highway, Manji to Nannup is a very tranquil ride.
The final bit of day 6 is heading west. Travelled this in late afternoon and I don't think I'd like to be on this road after 3.30 mainly due to following traffic being dazzled driving into the sun.
All in all I'm a lot more relaxed about the ride and as big Kev once said "I'm excited".
