I am wondering if this is the time to replace my current touring bike and would appreciate some advice, criteria, recommendations, makes and models to avoid, places for sound rather than just sales advice in Perth.
I have an old but in its day a very good quality touring bike, Revel Romany, with Shimano gears, Reynolds 531 tubing, etc. However, it has a 5 gear sprocket, the high and medium primary gear are starting to show signs of wear, cantilever brakes. Upgrading the gear levers, brakes and levers is impossible, ie, cantilever brake pivots are too close, 5 gear sprockets no longer supported, saddle stuffed, etc. But the basics are still sound and original, which is amazing to me to say that about a 22yr old bike that gets used for daily shopping etc!
Is it worth replacing the whole drive train, but unfortunately not the brakes? Rebuild rear wheel, front and rear sprockets (7, 8 or 9 cluster) gear changes, integrated brake and gear levers with something decent?
Every shop says that modern bikes just will not last anything like as well.
So in a touring bike what does one get for the money?
I wasn't tempted until seeing a Merida touring bike the other day after another frustrating shop visit.
I know if I am to make this change I need to move fast.
