written in today's Herald Sun (fridee). Apparently authorities are getting quite a few complaints of cyclists tearing along southbank promenade outside southgate and casino which is causing problems for pedestrians and tourists, especially during the Commonwealth Games. Melbourne council has indicated it won't be doing any shortterm measures. It has been touted as drastic as banning cyclists or putting in a cyclists only lane on the promenade or as a minimum speed limits imposed down to 10kmph.
There are signs asking cyclists to dismount when riding under the arts centre and Princess bridge, which is blatantly ignored (unless you count the sundee markets).
But the council don't wish to act as there currently is no viable alternative cycling route in that area, short of using the major road on tht otherside.
So I'm guessing cycling through southbank is here to stay, but in what form and for how long is anyone's guess.
