Following my commentary about the Capital City Trail Problem.. here is my current summary about the Merri Creek Trail when going North starting in Thornbury from Miller St (near Bell St).
So I decided to take this trail because it is near me, and because I ride the Capital City most days anyway.
Starting off its good, lane is well sized, well marked and good surface quality.
However there are some issues which I had some fun of encounting while it rained! Bridges are wood - which is fine, if they are like the first two which are coated with a surface protector which gives it almost a sandpaper like finish - great in the wet!. However there are many others which are not so coated, and are just dangerous when they are wet. Two of which are metal and were like riding on ice. These desperately need to be replaced with something not so slippery, or at least coated with something. Also the multiple wood bridges need the same coating.
I was hoping to bash this trail out all the way to Mahoneys Road in Campbellfield/Broadmeadows, as this is where my partner works and she wants to start riding to work occasionally. Now I saw one sign which said 9km to Mahoneys Road. That was the last of that. Right in the middle of Fawkner, the trail vanished. I was at what looked light a T-Intersection at Melways 18 A3, where at to my left is "Hare St" and to my right is a Bridge which crosses to "Broadhurst Ave".
However the Melways shows a sealed shared pathway continuing North - following the Merri Creek. However nothing was there, apart from something the equivalent of 4WD track.
So my trip ended there.
Is this an appropriate forum to get BV to contact the relevant Councils to fix the bike paths? Because I plan on travelling most of Melbournes bike paths when I can.. and plan on reviewing them here
Now that I know how to pick up the Merri Creek Trail again, i'll find my way past this spot, and continue the ride....
