I think someone in another thread mentioned the Scotchmans trail as being one of the poorly marked paths in Melbourne, well I'd just like to say that trying the Capital City trail from Docklands for the first time recently I'd have to say it ranks as one of the most confusing ever.
I tried to follow the map but ended up somewhere in Moonee Valley. A couple of other people also asked me for directions but I didn't know.
It seems that you have to go up a ramp naear the railway station at Racecourse road, but there are no signs to this effect and the TravelSmart map says nothing about it.
Then, once you go up the station path, you reach a road and there are no signs as to where to go next. I took a stab in the dark at a set of stairs at the other side of the road (which in themself are not very bicycle friendly) and found myself on a track (but still no idea if it was the right one).
Finally I reached the road at the Zoo railway station in Royal Park and there were multiple divergent paths, but there was absolutely no signage to tell me which one to take. I tried the TravelSmart map but again - no clues. I eventually tried a few of them before realising that I needed to cross the rail lines and make a left turn.
Then only moments later, more choices of paths and no signage as to which one to take. Following the TravelSmart map I ended up reaching Royal Parade twice on different paths, but none of them were the one that I wanted.
I finally found the path along the railway line by cutting through an unmarked carpark and the rest of the track was fairly self explanatory.
The councils in the area really need to work on improving this track, as it is promoted as being the track to use in Melbourne - but I'd hate to be a tourist and get even more lost than a local person and end up in Essendon or something ....
What is worse is that it seems that just about every road has more than necessary signage for cars, but bike riders are assumed to have a sixth sense on where to go.
Does anyone else have any gripes about the need for better signing or have better luck on the Capital City Trail?
