Could someone please advise what happened to Bicycle Victoria's Great Melbourne Bike Ride. I realise it wasn't run in 2005 and now notice that it again isn't being run in 2006 as they are targeting the Bike Paths Discovery Day for a second year. In 2004 Bicycle Victoria has approximately 8000+ cyclists who each paid $30+ and this year on the bike paths discovery day they had 1700+ do an unpaid ride. The logic escapes me why they'd decide to get rid of 8000 paid riders infavour of 1700 unpaid riders on 6 bike paths. That's asking for trouble surely given the narrowness of bike paths? I can understand their motto "more cyclists, more often, but how many of the 8000 chose not to ride the Discovery day because they view riding on bike paths, enmasse as dangerous, especially with small children zig zagging with no room for error. Was it because of the logistics of organising a ride over the west gate bridge, did Orange pull out of major sponsorship, was insurance an issue or were costs too prohibitive? (although a free even surely attracts expenses?). Repeated emails to BV have resulted in no response and there has never been a formal notice put on BV's website. I also understand there is now a 50km ride during Round the Bay out to Werribee and back, but I would have liked to have done the 45km GMBR in march with my more inexperienced friends, train over winter then do the 210km RTB in October. Apparently there were issues, but no one is talking from BV.
