i'm limiting myself to $1500 although at the moment i'm kinda considering anything with carbon forks, which means the giant ocr 3 has got my quite interested. after many years with a mtb, i would really like a road bike coz they are obviously more energy efficient and the drop down handlebars look good.
BUT, i like to ride on bike paths when i can, and these are often unsealed. what is it about road bikes that makes them generally imcompatible with unsealed surfaces? is it because the bumps can damage the bike, or because the tyres generally aren't suitable for off road use?
if it's the latter, is it as easy as getting some tyres that give me a little more flexibility as to what surface i ride on? and if it's the former, does that mean i'll be consigned to mtbs or hybrids forever more?
