Dear fellow cyclists,
We need your help.
Recently, it has come to my attention that the government's Federation Bicycle Trail may be in jeopordy due to the greed of a few chemical companies that are near the proposed bike path (see reference links below).
Please write to your local council and to The Age to show your support for the trail.
Cyclists in the Western suburbs of Melbourne have long been neglected by both councils and government bodies that only see people in this area requiring cars to mobilise themselves around the city. The bicycle is seen as recreational equipment to be used on sunny weekends. They even ignore calls for better public transport.
We need to show them that this is not the case. More and more people in the West are struggling to keep up with the high rises in fuel prices, registration and other costs associated with driving a car. The common bicycle is now in more households than ever before and bike sales are out stripping car sales. More people are willing and looking for ways to travel to work and into the CBD, but unfortunately there is little choice.
The Federation Trail is a vital link to change this and to keep people fit. At the moment to ride into the CBD is almost not an option due to the lack of cycling infrastructure, especially along the Princess Highway. The growth of new estates and households in the West is growing very rapidly especially with the high cost of housing in the Eastern suburbs as compared to the West, but these estates are self enclosed utopias, that have all the facilities within them, yet no way of exiting the estate unless you have a car. Public transport is almost non existent.
Please help us by writing to your local member, The Age (firstname.lastname@example.org
), and Brimbank Council (email@example.com
) and send a copy to Bicycle Victoria (firstname.lastname@example.org
