Riding Every Day wrote:Advocacy takes many forms. Sometimes it's even inadvertent.
Not an advocacy video, this is instead a very well-written advocacy letter.
It seems that little by little, and day by day, people are waking up to just how unpleasant it can be to ride a bicycle on our roads.
This was a letter to the editor in the Sunday Hun.
Out with ill will
Despite not being a regular cyclist, last weekend I took part in the 200km Ride to Conquer Cancer from Albert Park Lake to Healesville and back again.
I apologise to drivers that we were riding on your roads, and that it may have taken you five minutes longer to get where you were going because you had to wait to overtake a cyclist.
But you know that cyclist you revved your engine at? Did you see that yellow flag on their bike? That represented a cancer survivor, or a cancer battler, and they were riding to raise money for Peter Mac.
To the driver who yelled abuse at me, I am a 40-year-old mother of four who was out of breath getting up that last hill, crying tears of pain. Sorry I am so slow you had to wait 20 seconds to get past.
I was not riding to annoy you. I rode because my father is battling cancer and receiving treatment at Peter Mac and for all the others who are battling this disease and their families.
To the P-plater who raced up behind a group of cyclists, and almost rear-ended them before slamming on your brakes, one day you may thank us for the $6.2 million we raised.
Hopefully your life will be cancer-free but unfortunately it is inevitable someone you know will be touched by cancer. To the driver of the V8 ute who honked their horn so loudly at a slow-riding elderly lady that she almost fell off her bike, she rode 200km for this cause when she could have been sitting comfortably at home.
She was not intentionally holding you up the minute or so it took to get past her. I want to thank the many impatient motorists I saw. You made me ashamed of what I’ve thought in the past about cyclists.
