No argument here. And I wouldn't limit it to kids. I would also say, there's a lot more consumption of higher processed foods, and larger portions, and more hidden calories in them, than 'back in my day' too.
As mentioned elsewhere (or here? Can't remember). Exercise is rarely incidental these days. It's something that's 'done'. So there's 'sport'. Or 'training'. Or 'driving to the gym'. Instead of walking down the shops and lugging back a slab. (Just as a random example).
As a lad, I did some sport. (Basketball a bit. Tennis over summer. Swim squad once). But most of my exercise was to/fro school, and just being a kid. Riding around on my dragster. Playing with my mates. Climbing trees. (Not actually in a ) Backyard cricket until sundown. Kid stuff.
