Quote from the Herald sun:
'A CYCLIST was killed in a road accident a short distance from the Brighton Baths this afternoon.
The man, believed to be in his late 20s, collided with a truck at about 5.15pm on Beach Rd in Brighton.'
It must be the pedant/cyclist in me, but I hate the phrasing of these reports.
We don't know 'the cyclist collided with the truck' (or van if you read the Police report), we know there was a collision between a cyclist and a truck/van. From the brief Police report quoted earlier, it seems very likely the van struck the cyclist from the rear, or the side, when changing lanes. To me this should be written; 'Van collides with cyclist'.
As with most Herald Sun stuff, never miss an opportunity to put a slant on an article that will put a 'minority group' in a bad light.
Apart from the anger I feel towards the Herald Sun, and the feeling of helplessness I have when vehicles do collide with bikes, all my personal thoughts and emotions are with the loss of a young life, and the distress of his family.
Use the paths......a good route.
