Didn't take long, primarily because we all spent time on a scooter before graduating to a bike. A proper scooter, with about 12" wheels, pneumatic tyres... and a steep street
The scooter gave a good introduction to active stability - steering to balance. I cringe when I see little kids today riding those Razer scooters with rollerblade wheels, trying to balance them... they're just not stable, and it does nothing for their future cycling ability.
With a bit of practice, we learnt to ride the scooter down hills without putting a foot down. Soon I was doing the same on the bike, leaving Dad running along behind trying to catch up. Crashed a few times... and then a whole lot more times in the subsequent 30 odd years. Never had training wheels.
Hannah's getting a runbike soon. She's not 20 months yet. I have no intention of ever putting her on a bike with training wheels.
