I've recently starting servicing my own Shimano cup and cone hubs and am after a recommendation on a good quality axel vice. Adjusting the tension on the hubs after cleaning and re-packing is probably the most difficult part of the job and I need a good axel vice. I've seen the block style one which inserts into a bench vice. Ideas/Suggestions?
+1 In many years of wrenching I've never used an axle vice nor really needed one. However maybe DM has a view about their use on some recalcitrant axles in the workshop. I note Park make one.
Adjusting Shimano hubs is sometimes fraught ime particularly on the lower end stuff where manufacturing tolerances are not as close as on DA stuff. It's usually a matter of feel either advancing the cone a tad to finger tight or just beyond and backing off then getting the locknut tight without roughness or a wobble in the hub. Sometimes it can take me 4 or 5 goes on lesser spec hubs whereas on my DA hubs I can often get it nipped up right just the once.
