Yeah, don't try it with the link on the bottom span of the chain. It won't work and you might eventually lose your balance while standing on the pedal trying to force it. Then you might fall over the bike and cut your leg on the large chain ring. Or so I've heard
Maybe my sarcasm meter is not sensitive enough, but it doesn't matter whether you close the link in the top run of the chain or the bottom... it does matter that you put it in the right way. It takes practically zero force to close a connex link - if you need to apply a force, then it hasn't been done right.
