Had an old bloke say to me once "I admire that you young fellas can ride up hills like this in your big ring".... until I pointed out to him that my big chainring is the size of the little chainring on his bike...

The thing is, 36t sprockets will only fit within a few rear derailleurs - most max out at 34t capability. Basically, any Shimano "Shadow"-type derailleur (M592 Deore, M662/M663 SLX [9- & 10-sp. respectively], M772/M773/M780 XT [9-, 10- & 10-sp.], M972/M973/M980 XTR) will accept a 36. And if you look really hard you will even find a select few 9-speed cassettes with a 36, which were intended for use on 29ers to overcome the slight effective gear increase caused by the bigger wheels.
