Just as a matter of curiosity, is there much difference in the sideways flex between the two? Lay them side by side on a flat surface, sitting up as they would when on the bike (i.e. with the link plates vertical). With one end of both held together, bend them as far as you can sideways and see how much difference there is. If the X10 is noticeably flexier, that could explain its poor shifting as it's just bending against the gears & not using its stiffness to ramp up to the next gear properly.
LovinDirt - As far as I know, only Shimano produce asymmetric chains.

I had no problems with them and noticed no difference compared with 105, Ultegra and Dura Ace chains (apart from the fact that they cost about half what Ultegra ones do). This is with an Ultegra 6700 groupset - maybe it's more tolerant of "floppy" chains"?
