The overall cassette width is the same for 8 & 9-speed, & just a tiny bit wider for 10-sp, so the spockets are thinner & closer together, with a suitably narrower chain to match. 8 speed can feel just a little bit rougher as the chain has that bigger gap to shift across. Chainring spacing is a little wider, and the rings a little bit thicker as well, but it's more forgiving of a mismatched chain than the rear is.
