I had a great time yesterday afternoon, so thanks to Brunswick for organising it. I've only competed in one other roller room competition - in March 2009.
Its definitely easier to get across town on the weekend than during the week
I rocked up rather late at 2 pm, but qualifying was still happening so I could still enter. I even had time to turn my wheel around to use the 15T rather than the 16T.
Now that I've got rollers myself, I definitely felt more comfortable spinning fast on the rollers during qualifying - 13.22 sec for "flying 200 m".
(Compare that to 17.3 sec outdoors and 16.87 sec indoors at DISC as my flying 200 m PB's ...)
I ended up being the fastest woman qualifier, just ahead of Jessica Morgan (13.3? sec).
In the two-up sprints on the rollers, I was up against Jess for 1 lap (400 m) ... I was on 86 gi, she was on a borrowed bike with 76 gi. I comfortably won.
The four/five person relay was amusing! Each person in the team had to do one lap - and the change-over had to occur by the time the lap counter had got to 50 m.
Both groups in the second round just used one bike (except if one person was much smaller/bigger than the others) ... so that was the tactic that my group did as well.
Note to self - clipping into pedals probably wasn't a good idea, because it makes the changeover take longer. (I started first.)
Then finally it was time for the 1-minute challenge. 48 X 15 is only 86.4 gi, so I borrowed a 14T cog off Matt Lees to give me 92.6 gi instead. (My 14T cog hasn't arrived yet.)
For interest, I had my HRM on the handlebars and soon after starting (too hard) I saw over 60 km/hr on the speedo
(61.6 km/hr was my max speed!)
Needless to say, my legs got tired about half way through the 1-minute, because I was riding a bigger gear than usual.
Distance covered = 875 m. Average speed = 48.6 km/hr.
I won the 1-minute challenge for the women, and received a pair of socks, t-shirt (with track bike pic on it) and two hats ... plus something from "knob" TBC.
I'm definitely glad I went to the minute challenge on 92 gi, cos 48 X 13 would have been too big a gear jump for me. So I did HTFU and ride a bigger gear than normal for the minute
Any idea when the next roller room comp will be on?
