Just a short report from Sunday to bask in the glory of a result, finally.
Casey Fields, C grade, and typical of the last few weeks, windy.
About 15 in the bunch, and attack was flavour of the day. There seemed to be one every lap or two. I even did, although, not really on purpose. I moved to the front to do a bit of work, and the ex-leader didn't stay on my tail and a gap opened up. Next thing I know, a guy past me saying, we've got a gap, lets rotate. Turned out there were three of us, and we rotated for about a lap before Gozzo pulled the pack back to us.
I have to admit though, I thought we were too far out to really have a go, so I have to admit I really wasn't turning myself inside out, which I think is required for a breakaway to succeed.
Anyway, aside from one or two that were dropped, we stayed pretty much together to the end.
Last lap, I was about 2nd last, and felt the need to move forward. Gozzo was on Iain's tail (Iain won the last race at Casey Fields, probably a good wheel to be on, given his form). They moved up a little on the back straight, and I got on their tail.
Second last corner, the pace was reasonable, but not excessive and we turned into the wind, up hill. The pace dropped as no one really wanted to go.
I saw a gap to the left, we were about 300m out, so I jumped.
I rounded the last corner in the lead, not willing to look back, and I expected the pack to come. 100m to go, and one finally did. I turned myself inside out, but it wasn't enough to hold him off and he beat me by half a wheel. I think I need to work on my top end speed with the crit season a month away.
This week club championships. Not a chance, but should be a good training ride. However, the social secretary has been trying to book me for Sunday, so I may miss it.
