You can buy a brass adaptor for French or presta valves - that enable you to use a conventional Service Station air pump. the cost is around $2, and the last time i saw them was at Bike Now www.bikenow.com.au
but that was over a year ago.
It is VERY imprortant to be able to be able to pump up a tire on ATB nd the GVBR - if you cant, you run the risk of waiting for hours for help....(though if you see me - i would be happy to help you out) Spending $$ on a good pump - eg Blackburn Airstyke, Topeak Morph - that can comfortably pump your tires up to the necessary pressure (eg 120psi for road bikes, 90psi for hybrids) is monely well spent - anythingelse is just extra weight to carry around - and is false insurance.
BTW - "normal Valves" are called schraeder vavles and are not usually provided with road bikes - as they dont retain the high pressure needed by road tires very well.
Hope this helps
