I was in the Snowgum clearance store (Cnr Dandenong Rd and Blackburn Rd in Clayton Nth or Springvale or somewhere like that) and they had a load of Snowgum branded hiking tents for $99. Apparently they had been bought by an Outdoor Ed company who had used them once only then returned them or gone broke. Stated weight was 3kg, but that seemed optimistic to me. I'm sure the usual price was Snowgums wildly inflated price for branded stuff, so now a bargain, maybe.
This one I think: Snowgum Caddis, RRP $399.
This tent used once is a bargain at $99.
Re Snowgums "wildly inflated price" for branded stuff, think of it like this:
You can buy a bike at your LBS for $1,500 or $3,000 or $4,500 or you could get a bike at Anaconda for $1,000 with similar specs to the $1,500 LBS offering.
Similarly in the tent area you could pay $800 or $1,200 for a tent which looks very similar to the $400 job but is made of better quality materials, has better stitching etc.
Snowgum is price competitive with the other players, Paddy Palin, Mountain Designs etc. ( You probably could get something similar at Anaconda in the $200 range but you would need to know your product specs. )
The Snowgum tent will be pretty close to the 3kg mark because it will have aluminium alloy poles compared to fibreglass in the sub $100 offerings and the bathtub floor will be the same waterproof material as the fly compared to a polypropelene floor in the cheaper tent.
With tents as with bikes you get what you pay for.
