Probably a touch steep, but it could be on the upper end 'reasonable', particularly if you're getting warranty and servicing.
The Jake the Snake is a nice bike; it would make a great commuter, can be adapted to be a good occasional roadie, and is brilliant for cyclocross (not that we have much of a culture of that here... yet). One thing to watch on cyclocross bikes is sizing; you might need to go down one size compared to a roadie. Higher bottom brackets for offroad clearance sometimes mean higher top tubes.
Avid Shorty brakes are absolute squealers. I had some Shorty 6 brakes for a while, tried every trick known to man, and every time I braked they always announced it to everyone in a 6 block radius.
