Took it out for the first long ride today and all I can say is I'm a very happy man.
The steel frame and large tyres just soak up the bumps and the handling is better than expected. Two things that really impressed me was how stiff the frame felt when climbing out of the saddle but still having the ability to soak up bumps. My other steel framed bike feels nowhere near as solid as this one. The other really impressive bit was how fast it is when powering along, some of the road sections I rode it felt just as home there as on the dirt. I've not had much experience with canti brakes, but had heard lots of horror stories. The Shorty Ultimates are pretty bloody good, locked the wheels easily when doing high 20's on bitumen. Gearing is fine, in fact I'm glad I put the 34 on the back, steep gravel section were easy to spin up while seated. Only negative is I noticed a bit of toe overlap when turning hard, not a huge issue. So big thumbs up to Gunnar, I took a bit of a gamble buying the frame without riding one and thankfully it paid off.
