Sooo, both bikes are sold, maybe I wasn't asking enough as the first to express interest bought in both instances
. So my budget will be as expected in the $1500-1600 mark.
Anyhoo, the dilemma continues after much web browsing this weekend. The current thinking is to just build this framehttp://www.excelsports.com/main.asp?page=8&description=Conquest+Pro+Frameset+2011&vendorCode=REDLINE&major=8&minor=1
With parts I already own such as wheels, bars, saddle, seat post and buy Rival shifters and derailleurs online and hunt down a cheap BB30 compact crank set.
The other option is simply just buy this online http://www.competitivecyclist.com/za/CCY?PAGE=PRODUCT&PRODUCT.ID=8038&MODE=SPECIALS
which appears to be a bargain but lacks the frame braze ons I might require down the track if I want to dip my toes in the light touring waters or just to carry everything two young children in a trailer might require.
There are also a couple of light tourers with disc braking like I originally wanted such as the Kona Honky Inc or the Genesis Criox De Fer http://www.evanscycles.com/products/genesis/croix-de-fer-2011-cyclo-cross-bike-ec026194
but both would require significant expense to get the SRAM shifting and hood shape I prefer. Thanks to earlier posters for pointing these out.
Decisions, decisions, my brain is now fried and I'm no closer to a decision...
