I left at 5:50am, got over to Warrigal/Burwood Hwy by 6:00. Looked for Ottu, my good 1:20 ride buddy on the off chance he had worked out the obscure ride start instructions. Rode on solo at 6:05am. Pulled out the Ipod, but the battery was flat!
Got up some good speed on some of those Burwood Hwy downhills, and with the light rain falling, I had to dip my lid to keep the stinging rain drops out of my eyes. The roosters tail leaping off the front wheel in the front light kept me entertained for a few blocks.
Riding along Mountain Hwy in the Basin, and still could not see Mt Dandenong for the fog/weather. I was feeling pretty flat and uninspired and sure that I would post a lousy climb time, so why bother... I really needed a ride buddy this morning to snap me out of it.
Made it to the base of 1:20. Softness had set in by now, and I piked on the whole reason for being there. However, I discovered the bakery sold a fantastic apple cinamon scroll, and the cafe did a mean latte.
I sat down, very content with myself, and was taking that first, highly anticipated sip. Hooking up my bike to the outdoor coffee sign/bannister was a huge mistake. The bannister fell on the bike. With my catlike reflexes, I lept to save the bike, missed, and knocked the table, spilling my latte completely and all over my gloves.
Someone is telling me I shoulda climbed the hill.
The barrista felt pity for the lycra clad idiot out the front of his shop and made me another one...
I finished it off, but was a little bit glum now.
I turned and headed for home. Ride home was rain/drizzle free and uneventful, although I remembered to keep a low profile through Boronia. Did a good climb up from the valley of Boronia Rd to Mitcham Rd, and that was my ride highlight.
So while I can say you are all a bunch of soft doona huggers, you can also say I'm a soft piker, so we are even, OK?... All the same, glad I went out.
