Anyone looking for an alternative training ride for the ATB or similar should try riding down to Phillip Island. We do it every year about this time and this year we were blessed with the best possible weather you could wish for. We start at Cranbourne and then follow the South Gippsland Highway through Tooradin and all the way down to San Remo. Then it's over the big bridge onto the island. If you turn right to Rhyll you can get the best open sandwiches you could imagine from the corner shop overlooking the water. Then continue straight ahead to the Nobbies, before turning back to Melbourne.
If you aren't up to riding all the way back you might be able to arrange a lift back to Melbourne. The road has a wide sealed shoulder for most of the way and offers very safe cycling with some glorious views as well.
I have uploaded the elevation profile and Google Earth overlay here
The only warning I would make is that it would be hard work if you had a howling southerly wind all the way down.
