In light of the persistence here goes Kitty,
This being my 3rd foray into the D grade scene over at casey fields, by far this was my most satisfying one.
A bit of history of my previous 2 attempts, 6th for the first 3rd for the 2nd
Things kicked off in the morning nice and easy went down to the BBC for a coupla waffles which i critically note have seemed to fall in terms of standard, the chocolate seems watered down and waffles low in overall satisfaction, ok before this progresses onto a BBC beating i shall get down to business.
Went down typically of me in my world champ colours, was thinking of donning the vert but elected not to as the risk of embarrassment loomed akin the cumulonimbus clouds over the south eastern suburbs, weather was partly cloudy with a slight drizzle as i departed cranbourne station. The was a brief splatter but in the distance i could see the at then northerly pushing the water vapour away.
Rocked up with no one there and plenty of time to get ready. A moderate headwind was on offer for the whole duration of the race, 24 D grade competitors kicked off nice and slow sitting on 34-36 with couple of idiots going off the front only to be reeled in by me or some other guy from the bunch. Plenty of juniors in the bunch on their god knows what 32 rings? Plenty of jostling for wheels but did the usual barge in over your front wheel when i wanted to get in, but majority of the race i was riding on the side checking everybody out. Dean Sanfillipo this particular tradie was the guy to watch(hes in C grade now) cos he could easily ride away from the whole bunch. I know him pretty well and went away with him in the break, at that point i was in a dilemma the 3 lap signal did not even come up yet and i was actually thinking this was just too bloody early but we had a good 200m gap on them, sharing the pace 36-38 into the wind and 42-44 the other way. He was really driving it and i wasnt confident to share that kinda pace all the way to the line to contest the sprint with him, therefore i went up to him saying look Dean i dunno if i can do this and you are on your own, if you are gonna drag me to the line i am gonna sit on your wheel and let you take 1st cos you worked for it. Then for the next lap or so i was thinking it would be a little more fun and less painful sitting up and contesting the sprint cos i was confident of putting in a good sprint. Ok so i sat up with 4 to go and promised Dean that i would give the bunch a good interval session by surging as a result breaking their rythm. Went back and this chick in a Kennedy kit asked if i got dropped, i said didnt say anything. i was angry, nvm i decided to shut up and dish out how ever much pain i could so as to ensure Dean stayed away. In the end at 1 to go the usual jostling for position took place and another few idiots tried to go away. With that pace at 42-44 you cant stay away unless you are cancellera, if you do stay away come look for me, i will gladly buy you a beer. Many kids tried to go but them bouncing all over the saddle on their gearing at ??? 120-130rpm?? Dean was a good distance away and i managed to grab a wheel which was well.. a little too slow for my liking.
This was how the last 300m panned out, i was at 6th wheel, kid goes off the front a guy in a blue kit goes after him, another kid goes, nullified by the same guy again. Another bloke in the liquidgas kit goes and a kid chases. I was just sitting there. At this point of time the pace is 50.. i dunno who in the right mind would try to go off the front. Everytime someone went off the front i yelled 'TOO EARLY TOO EARLY' true enough they werent able to even hang on to the long line. In the final 150m i was out of the saddle in a nice gear waiting to pounce. The blue guy went he was spent, all over the bike but the bike wasnt going foward, took a quick glance back to see who was on my wheel, all of them were gasping. BANG i went. Dived to the right took one side looking left and didnt know how far i got on them. I love the sprints! Got a little money and plenty of good fun. Gonna head back for another dose of adrenalin.
Ta until next time
