Well, it was a beautiful day for a ride and I couldn't believe Craig was trying to call it quits before 2pm...so I hauled him off the train at Highett, dragged him back to my place and loaded him up with tyres and tubes. For some reason his Conti Ultra Races are not foldable...whereas mine are (maybe they aren't
). Well, they went on OK and got us down to Frankston at a good pace. The average speed from my place down was 38.00kmh exactly. Not a bad effort, most of the time I looked the digits were reading around 42-45, the further we got, the faster we went. I finished off the final sprint into Frangers at a nice 48kmh.
We then found our way to the bakery stop I last went to with Commi - I was ready for the slippery bricks and tiles this time and didn't repeat my "deer trying to run on ice" impression - very happy about that. Fueled up we headed out and Craig managed to find the puncture fairy again - boy he was pissed off...that's 3 flats in one day. Conti Ultra Race's are the Puncture Fairies' "tyre of choice" 2 years running now isn't it?
Rolling back into the headwind at 30-32kmh Craig wanted more air in the rear tyre, so we found a bike shop somewhere near Edithvale. Interesting shop, looks like an old abandoned petrol station with dozens of bikes lined up out front. Two very friendly blokes in there were happy to let Craig use their floor pump to get the rear up to full pressure. I always feel obliged to return the favour by buying something from them. Always checking on prices for CO2 cartridges, these guys had em for $3.50...bargain! So I cleaned them out (nearly)...very happy
. Craig picked up a nice new pair of GP4000 blue tyres after admiring the shoes on my bike. $90 is damn good value for a pair of those in Melbourne. Most bike stores want that much for just ONE!!! These guys could be our local answer to PBK
Heading of with new tyres and enough CO2 canisters to blow up a post-office (Craig's term...not mine
) we hauled off up Beach Road back to Black Rock where we bid our farewells and I headed off up Bluff Road clinking as I went...maybe I should throw a keg party with all this CO2
Thanks for being talked out of your foul mood Craig
It was a great mid-winter ride...now to brace ourselves for the next 3 days...it looks terrible. Thinking of wussing out altogether and driving in...it's only a 3-day week for me
