Just not for long
I concur, perhaps he was going for a hidden strava segment e.g. "first half of Belmore KOM"
This was a genuine KOM attempt by moi. I had an easy ride the day before, and on this ride Gorilla was out front setting a genuinely comfortable recovery pace, so I had fresh legs at the base.
I had plan A, B, C, and D.
Plan A was to be on HH’s wheel at the base. Tick.
Plan B was to hit hard early and try to hang on.
Plan C was to stay on HH’s wheel along the climb and make a move at some opportune time.
Plan D was to decide on Plan B or Plan C depending how I felt at the base.
I chose Plan B. I committed to the pain, and went out hard, and had a brilliant first half of the climb. As the burn increased, I kept commanding the legs to go through the pain. The legs just did not respond. In the post-match interview, HH conceded he was ready to surrender after seeing my impressive first half effort. But then he noticed my fade, dug in, and passed me comfortably with 40 meters to the line. Finally with about 10 meters to go, my legs responded again with a pathetic little kick. In personal record times, this was a fourth for me.
So back to the Team FlexorCranks strategy meeting room for my brain and the goats to determine a better plan, and as for my legs, they will have to do some more hill work.
Points: HH 1, Bowi 0, Gorilla 2 – for providing a 15 km lead-out.'FlexorCranks - taking triple the time to analyze than to ride.'
The Real D.
