sounds like a bad experience I"m surprised it didn't go well, only having done the Amy's Gran Fondo which has always been very well organised.
A few things they might learn from the day, if it's a Total Fire Ban with extreme conditions (which we all knew at least a week ago) do you really want large groups riding through these areas? You are extremely exposed already as a cyclist, then you have heat and hydration issues to contend with. If there was a fire, can you imagine what would happen to the masses of cyclists in bush areas, smoke, heat, and absolutely no protection!!!! What a failure in duty of care.
During summer and winter I don't buy tickets to these kind of events until probably 7 days before event so I can at least predict the ride weather. If they sell out, well wasn't meant to be, if you're keen then you can still do the ride self-supported as it's on public roads.
