Today's ride was mysterious - vidman was missing in action but met us on Burke Rd for a quick heads up before he sent us off. Today's route was one of my favorite suburban rides so I filled in as navigator, Susan volunteered to ride at the back of the group, Matt kept an eye out and helped get messages down the line.
We headed up Burke Rd with Tony assisting navigation to the Chandler Highway; once we were there I was on familiar territory we headed along Lower Heidelberg Road and then on to Banyule Rd. The group was getting strung out with the rolling hills but frequent regroups and Susan doing a great job staying with riders saw us making steady progress. This is a great ride along Viewbank, up past the derelict silos and descending past the pony club. We safely got across the one lane bridge which needs respect because of the blind approaches and headed to Bonds Rd. Quick regroup at the bottom and we headed up - this is a deceptive climb because it's not an even gradient it averages just over 4% in the 2 km's but has a nasty pinch of over 10% in it. Chapeau to everyone for doing this in good time when we had already ridden 30k's of rolling hills.
We rode back but turned off at Burke Rd after the cutting - we had a split with some riders missing the turn, Susan and others kept going. I went back and just as our grupetto was under way Michael got a flat, quickly fixed we headed off along Burke Rd with Gary and Matt riding strongly. Peter and I rode in as lantern rouge (David turned off at Grange Rd) and rejoined the grupetto for an enjoyable coffee - sorry we missed the others.
Thanks to everyone for being patient, good humored throughout and safety conscious - well ridden today there is no where to hide on a ride like this
