Pace has generally been mid-20s average, but don't be put off if this is faster than your pace. (Aim is to ride at the pace of the slowest person - there are strong riders designated to ride at the back to make sure no-one gets left behind and there are regroup points if the group does get split) There is always a coffee break mid-ride (plus option of having coffee/breakfast afterwards). One requirement though: road bike or flat-bar road bike is needed unless you are a strong enough rider to be able to keep up on a different kind of bike!
Vidman's SMR requires a road bike - "a racing style bike is preferred, however a flat bar road bike will do in a pinch."
SOME weeks the SMR runs at a pace/style that is suited to less experienced riders, but other weeks the ride is NOT targetted at beginners, but is deliberately aimed at more experienced/faster riders, and even "expert" riders.
Read the SMR thread directly for correct information on a week by week basis if you are interested.
Re type of bike, a recent post in the facebook group said "as anthing else will be too slow unless you are damn fit or strong". (So that part of my above post was not entirely invention on my part!) My interpretation was that if there happens to be anyone who is capable of keeping up and riding safely on another kind of bike (although not a fixie!) they are welcome to do so (even though I realised it is not terribly likely that anyone will) and there are plenty of cyclists around who are definitely capable of doing so. At least, I have gathered that a person hardly needs to be an elite rider to be able to beat me when I am on a road bike and they are on a hybrid, single speed or mountain bike.... and I'm not the slowest in the group.
Apologies for momentarily forgetting that not all the rides will be aimed at beginners (which is certainly true.... and likely with Sundays attracting more people there now will be more opportunity for variety re pace/terrain), but to date that has been the case for all the rides except one. I am suprised that I forgot though !
I've now seen the facebook update for this group, and the rides will DEFINITELY stay on Sunday.
