Using our roads on any form of transport is inherently risky, but by making statements such as the above, they don't exactly promote cycling.
I think that it's most likely that the organisers have done this on legal advice as a disclaimer. I cannot see any mention of public liability or personal accident insurance coverage included as part of the entry fee.
It's a small club so this is in my opinion a prudent and transparent statement - I imagine it was also made in full awareness of your contra argument.
This event has an enviable record as a well run and successful ride - this outcome promotes cycling in the most positive way.
