Baldies Bunch: For those who are time poor and keen to get into bunch road riding. All are welcome.Next Baldies Bunch hit out
: Hell of the North East - 7am, Sunday 26th June, Marcellin College, Bulleen Road entrance, Bulleen. 35km approx.Ride Report Sunday 22nd May
A positively balmy late autumn Sunday morning greeted the Baldies Bunch riders at the gates of Marcellin College, 7am. Three newcomers in the Bunch - Martin Bennet and Brian Nathan, both Rosanna mothers group alumni from a few years ago (no question, they are tough shackles to break), and Ben Hutchins, a Northcote native and daily commuter.
Ben, by the way, had recently near demolished his Giant (and self) in a tangle with a car, but had since blinged it up it with a handy set of Mavic's (I think) and was ready to let it out over the rolling hills of Heidelberg...and beyond if it got him that far. It wasn't looking good on the Heidelberg Road climb past Ivanhoe Cycles when the chain started slipping under pressure (the ride hadn't even started at that point), but thankfully that was as bad as it got.
Yours truly also had something to bring to the Bunch by way of conversation about prangs, having been involved in a head on with a car the week prior. Had the new fixie less than 24 hours when this turkey attempted to take me out...which he did...then drove off! Luckily, a local private investigator was waiting at the lights and saw everything. Eight charges have been laid. The feeling of Hyundai Excel bumper bar wrapped around the knee is not something I'd recommend ordinarily.
Back to the Bunch. Martin and Brian quicky got into the groove grinding through the climbs to the Fitzsimons Lane roundabout, despite considerable weight disadvantage with their sturdy steeds. Tim Hoare, back for his second outing, and loving his 3 month old tourer, was already talking about upgrading to a lighter, speedier machine. Ben, having been off the bike for a few weeks, looked right at home punching through the twists and turns of the Banyule Flats.
Having safely lead the Bunch to the top of the Mount Pleasant Road climb, Martin almost lost the days takings as the exertion nearly got the better of him. We've all been there. Still draws a laugh, though!
Back to Cafe ?? in Burgundy Street for the apre velo pick me up. Another great hit out.
