Well today was interesting to say the least. All did not go well with Kathy but I will let her post about that.
Ian and I however had an interesting time
Before we set out I decided to change my front tube and tire. Did that, put 20 psi in, checked that it was seated correctly and pumped it up. Tube started hissing at 80. Kept it up after I pulled the pump off. Pull the tire back off. New tube. Leaks from the base. HHmmmm
Grab dodgy patched tube. Repeat. Running behind schedule now. Off we go. Tramtrack noise from front. We have a look. Can;t see a thing. I adjust the front brake anyway and off we do. Hmmmm seeems to be blowing, not much benefit to me.
Up past black rock and everyone I pass is staring cos of the noise the bikes making. I snap at one guy "its a tram right" God its hard staying with Ian. In fact he is riding away from me. And as I go down the long downhill and wind it up past 40, i twitch or something and suddenly.
I am in a speed wobble. A huge one. Its getting worse and worse, its going to spit me off. Holy #$## got it. What the F@$$@# was that!!!!!!!!! I am in the middle right hand lane... I twitch back onto the right side of the road. Bloody hell........ Ians out of sight. Bastard.
I chase him slowly.. I am really really conservative. The bike feels rediculously twitchy. Sheeesh. Catch him at aspy where he is waiting. We roll on down to edithvale. He is saying how easy this is. Doesnt seem easy to me. Bike feels sort of allright at 31.
We turn around at the cop shop on station street. "Short turns" Ian says. "Its tough at the front" He drops behind me "its not too bloody good back here either" we roll back sweating blood at 26.
At aspy we stop so I can check out my bike. The front wheel dont turn. Its locking up at each turn. The rim is touching the brake. Hmmmm. "Got the spoke key Ian" Fiddle with a couple of spokes.. "noo this isnt quite.. Friggin ell. " The tire is off and out side the bead of the rim for.... maybe 3 inches. The brake pad is touching the tire. Its actually locking the wheel for a spokes width each revolution. Wooooow, scarey. Explains why i am so buggered tho
So what happened? It wasn;t locking the wheel when I had a look after leaving home. And neither of us noticed it. I am sure I checked the tire was seated properly the second time I replaced it. But they can't come off an ok rim so I musnt have. So my memory of checking it must be from the first time I had it off the rim. And I must have screwed up. And it must have been seated almost ok Enough to cause a speed wobble? Well with possibly bad input from me and the gusty wind and the fact that the wobble must have almost brought the tire right off the rim.. apparently. I can;t believe I survived that one. I can;t believe the tire didnt tear right off or the tube blow. I should be in a dettol bath right now.
We fix it. I roughly sort the spokes I have fooled with. And off we go. Well its easier. And before long we are in with some quick people. But I am nervous. And I am buggered. I am just hanging on. And then I aint. And then I am riding along all by myself. And suddenly.
A weave. Scary. "What thistime" And then that sound Skkkkkksssssssssskkk from behind. "bloody hell someone has just clipped my back wheel and thrown it down the road" I go back. "You ok mate" A triathelete on a very carbon very bling thing. "Yeah my fault.. sorry" Well I didnt think I had backed off. "S ok mate, didnt cost me any skin" I headed off. Noting that the chalk encouragements to the other Kathy have been modified since yesterday.
"WATTS UP? WATT THE? SO WATT"
Past cerberus. All alone. Kathy and Penny and lisa and Alex went past. Uey. Say hi. Ring Ian. Who at this point is damm near in St Kilda
He decides to abort and catch his plane. I chase Kathy et all. Catch them at black rock
And they wanna go to mordi. Sigh. We roll down to modi at an easy pace. Roll back to black rock with Kathy refusing to come any where near my back wheel. Must have been talking to the other guy. And the slower I went the furthur from it she stayed. Hot chocky at Black Rock.. cought up to the others and then the ride back to Port Melb. On the way I discovered that one reason the bike was so nervous was that in the speed wobble I had twisted the bars so they no longer pointed straight ahead.
Ahhh well. Cought up with everyone back at port. Great to see everyone. I still don;t know where Alex went. Rode back home.. dodging idiots on the capital city bike trail the whole way. Did laps of Hawthorn velo.. when I saw richard there. He said he had just been talking to the Euan who does not post as Euan about the BV ride.
Left after the fifth cut across by the same little kid. Is is that having kids makes you stupid or that you are stupid becouse you have kids? I really thought about punching out the father but you know so far no disasters really blight the day. I expect he will back over the kid in his car soon enough. Also some charming woman training her dog to not bark at cyclists by holding it at the entrance and letting it bark at cyclists. And a couple of kids playing catch with 2 dogs on the bank of the velodrome. Next barbie we buy no meat.!!! Geez bike paths and velos are dangeous on weekends. And I have so little patience with stupid people .
So yeah it was a good day.. I expect I did my hundred, But it wasnt what I expected at all
