That's what I would have thought until I rode Traralgon - Toongabbie - Cowwarr - Heyfield - Tinamba - Maffra in January.
They're scary little roads when you get out there.
if they have support cars and plenty of signs, cos there's no shoulder and cars don't expect you. So long as they avoid Nambrok-Maffra (Tinamba) Road.
Tinamba to Maffra was no worse than the rest of it. I took the back route from Heyfield to Tinamba to avoid the Nambrok-Tinamba section, and it was quite lovely.
Actually, I reckon the nastiest part of the ride was from the 5-ways intersection (where the Rosedale road and the Cowwarr road meet) in to Heyfield, because it's quite a busy road but still very narrow. Glad to be on a solid tourer with 35mm tyres along there, because I had to ditch it into the gravel several times.
May be a different story on a substantial group ride with signage etc., but I can't see how... when there is a truck coming each way on a road that's barely big enough for two trucks to pass, something has to give.
Still, there are back routes from Traralgon toward Rosedale, so that's manageable if need be.
I'm more puzzled by Niggle's advice not to book accommodation. That sounds like a bigger change than a diversion around roadworks...
