I stopped about 2 years ago for a lady who'd been hit on her bike by a car. Car was turning a corner to the right and lady apparently shot out into a pedestrian crossing there. Discussion on the legalities of riding over pedestrian crossings aside.....
I came round the corner a second or 2 later and see a body lying on the road. i'm a bit wtf has happened here and suddenly 2 young blokes run onto the road and drag this body away. i saw blood pissing out of her leg/foot/ankle. (can i say that word? - well there was a hell of a lot). and it was gushing out and leaving splats as it fell.
i pulled up - what has happened? she was hit by a car. Another guy looking mortified said he he hit her. Why did you pull her off the road guys? ummmm - we thought we'd better. this lady was screaming horrendously and only had on little chinese satin slippers. Her left foot was essentially attached only by 2 inches of skin.
Her ankle was blown apart, bones and meat clearly visible and her whole foot was swinging like a rag doll.
Guys - has anyone rung an ambulance? good idea *as I smack myself in the head*
it's a no brainer guys surely...? This lady was also really guarding her guts so i have no idea whether there was other internal damage as well. People were standing around doing nothing. Has anyone got a towel or a blanket. Nup. Can anyone please try and find one. Nobody, except me, did anything. I'm not trying to big note myself but was shocked at the absolute uselessness/fright/inability for others to even step forward to try. Can someone go into that cafe and at least ask for a towel. finally someone did but the cafe didn't give one.
now the next thing is where i let myself down. i've had friends stack out in the sticks and have no hesitation in ripping off a top or a pair of legs or whatever to stem gushing blood. I had nothing with me - no long sleeves, only the jersey and shorts i was wearing and I sat there for a minute thinking i have to stop this blood gushing out of her leg but no way in hell am i ripping off my top here.
so i used my hands. Within 3 mins this lady was out of it and unconscious. Whether it was pain/shock/injury or all of the above. The ambulance took about 15 mins to get there and so i tried to at least straighten her foot and clamped on my hands to try and stop the blood. i asked again and again if anyone had a towel in their cars and nobody did anything. nobody came to help me either (maybe they thought i was a nurse or something).
anyway, finally the emergency services turned up, i cleaned off my hands with the ambo alcohol, spoke to the coppers. The ambulance took my details and rang me back later that day to "go and get a blood test". I thought it was overkill but then realised the potential of someone of who I have no idea whether they were safe (contamination wise) or not. So off I go, get a blood test and booter shots of Hep B, and repeat at 6 and 9 months. That cost me a bit. and the safe sex thing too. all the time...
If ever i was in a similar situation i would do things very differently. I also now carry disposable gloves in my backpack so if it happens again, i would help without having to go through the whole box and dice again.
I wouldn't ride past if i saw it again - I would still stop - but do things very differently. But once bitten, twice shy.
