I agree it is very frustrating, and I want a shop to be able to serve me until the posted closing time, but if I am being paid minimum wage I am not about to work overtime for nothing.
It then becomes a management issue to pay them until 6.30 or whatever to get the closing done properly.
A lot of shops are not willing to do this.
Soz Blybo, I haven't been a shop assistant for 25 years or so, and I still thought your comment was a bit steep.
Which comment? I said I was tempted but could never really carry through on an idea like that.
These are all mature women who serve in this store and would be paid for hours worked regardless of closing times, the award says so. Our retail staff are paid in 15 minute blocks even if only a couple of minutes over time, although on casual rates, and are often still there 45 minutes after closing if we get a late customer. Their staff would probably be getting close to $20 an hour too.
As an aside Fridays are the only night they are open till 6, obviously management wants to grab sales once a week of people who normally can't get there during the standard 9-5:30 opening hours.
I also got an "it's all too hard" attitude from the women who printed my receipt at lunch time yesterday when I went back. She was the only women not serving, although thumbing through an order book, but she was standing at a register so I went to that register. She looked up at me, looked around at the other staff to see if anybody was free and then grunted something and said "yes?"
I politely requested a copy receipt located under our loyalty card number and it must have been lucky to take 20 seconds of her time. I won't be loyal any more if possible. No wonder this once major chain is now down to only 2 stores.
