I wanted a Basenji but was overruled, they are great little dogs but not very common, my best friend at primary school had one.
I got overruled too. Can't remember why right now but believe them to be... hard to categorize temperament wise... so your not so sure what you will end up with.
However, to a certain extent that is true of most breeds. Our Whippet has a beautiful temperament as they almost all do but she was obviously frightened by a young girl of 5-8 years old at some stage and has been very defensive at times around kids of that age/stature. It's just something we have to keep an eye out for if we are letting her off lead, she did nip a boy on the leg when he visited the in-laws hobby farm.
Whippets are fantastic and in many ways cat like. Sleep most of the day, then have a crazy 10 minutes, and back to sleep. Not aloof but not cuddly either... unless you have a blanket nearby
. Oh yeah, they still have that chase instinct and like to dominate the "white fluffy" breeds down at the off lead park. If you really want to see em on mass, owners get together about 3-4 oclock on a Saturday arvo in the Gardiners Creek park behind the Burwood uni campus.
The best thing about Whippets is the lack of looking after they require. Ours currently live in a townhouse with a small yard and only gets a short walk every 2nd or 3rd day. They are great for those with busy lives, little space, or both. They rarely need a bath, don't smell and their hair is so fine you don't even notice them molting.
