Solution is to get a home zone 3G signal generating modem thingee... at a $15/month charge... and hope it doesn't use too much of my small internet download limit, as conveniently nobody can tell you how much data the thing chews up, even a ballpark figure

Yeah... install (and pay for) your own equipment to fill the gaps in their coverage

Squeeza, I actually got someone helpful Sunday arvo, trying all different things that at this point hadn't been suggested. And no, none of them made any difference. I appreciated the efforts tho.
And I agree, it's the TINIEST bit of data. When we were on Three, it was often the only thing that we COULD do. Now, with three or four bars, it'll sometimes just sit there, beeping at me it can't send. Then of course, at other times, right as rain. Hmm...
