Ok, that's me out.
I can argue against you guys, but I won't argue with Singer. I don't agree with everything
he says (I don't think even he agrees with everything he says), but he makes a stronger argument than I could ever hope to dispute.
Here's my contentious claim to start an argument: Peter Singer for supreme dictator of the world!
that with mass container transportation by ship, free-range eggs imported from New Zealand can have less of an impact on the planet than local battery-'farming'.
Yes, and local free-range eggs have less impact again.
Especially the ones that come out of the chooks that live under (and in) my Dad's fruit trees. There's a funny sight - chooks perched in trees.
So why not small-scale, localised permaculture-designed community farming, utilising a bartering system of sorts - you're entitled to an amount of the produce based upon the time you spend in the plot?
Because I'd go hungry, due to lack of interest and enthusiasm for DIY food-growing. I have some fruit trees... I'd rather pay some other poor sap to dig vegetables for me.
And, like I said, there's not enough cheap peasant labour these days. You know, the archetypal Eastern-European elderly hunch-backed woman with five teeth left.
My next contentious argument-starter: we need to introduce guest-worker visas for peasant labourers. Bring in those Eastern-European women to hand-weed our local organic carrot beds.
Yeah, perhaps that one's not likely to be so interesting... hmm... perhaps 'What is pornography?' then?
Post some examples and we'll take a vote
