Bike was custom built when I reached my current size, though I was a lot lighter back in those days
Perhaps then, start with;
how tall are you (now), and
how tall were you then (when the frame was fitted to you).
In '81 I think I was 165 cm. I'm now 166 cm. However my inseem length is 72 cm. Which according to http://www.ebicycles.com/bicycle-tools/ ... /road-bike suggests a road bike of 49 cm (19.5"), with crank length 165 or 170 mm. I'm thinking a shorter crank on a smaller frame is less likely to contact front wheel. My current bikes toe clips do make contact with the front wheel when turning.

....so have you consider these wise words? I'm guessing there is a good chance the tourer would have had 27" wheels. Would much be able to be reused?
Yes I've considered barefoots suggestions, see my previous comments.
Yes, 27" wheels, see Duckmeisters comments.
The bell is a bit rusty but still reusable.
To everyone else's suggestions. Thank you!
I was looking for a s/h carbon bike. That's what I meant by newer (than 1981).
However just got my credit card bill and erm, bike replacement will have to wait for another time.
Also need to replace my gas stove, so higher priority items bumped up the list.
Mods, how do I negate this WTB thread?
Thanks again everyone.
