Take the lane
I do this on Collins St as much as possible (take the lane) and when I'm in the 'bike lane' I'm on the right-most line and if I can't get out far enough from the dooring zone I lower my speed. It works sufficiently and has saved me from a few possible doorings (either taxis or tradies but I've also had a couple of people parking and failing to look when opening doors).
The only time I'm really in the 'bike lane' is when I'm heading up the hill from Swanston going towards Parliament and at that point my speed is around 15kph or less so I figure I should be able to react in time (as opposed to when I'm going 35 down the hill - I'm definitely claiming the lane then).
It's a pretty poor excuse for a lane and the gutter bike lanes leading up to traffic lights are poor planning.
