I may need to change my commute soon out to Williamstown. Would I be correct in assuming that the best way from the CBD would be via the Footscray Rd cycle path? If so, two questions:
(1) I need to get to heart of Williamstown, what is the best road to take from the path towards Willi? Hyde St or Whitehall St?
(2) What are the gotcha points on the Footscray rd path?
You are commuting, right? You are in a hurry and you do not wish to mess about? After you cross Shepherds Bridge, go along Whitehall to Somerville, then turn right up Somerville to Hyde, choice of bike path or bike lane. I chose the lane. YMMV. Left at Hyde and follow Hyde/Douglas Parade into Williamstown.Once again, choice of path or lane. I chose the lane Turn left at North because the bike lane continues there and then follow the Strand just because the scenery is pleasant and there is a bike lane on the road and follow it all of the way into Williamstown. Dependent on where you are going to in Williamstown you may chose not to turn left at North.
Good luck. What I would describe as a very pleasant commute.
The bike path from Shepherds Bridge and along Hyde can be a bit hairy because there are many driveways. That is why I chose to ride the bike lane along Hyde. I also regularly detour along the river from Shepherds Bridge just to avoid all of those entrances in Whitehall close to Shepherds Bridge. Other commuters may have better advice.
Stay fixed. Keeping a cool head.
