Whether 26km is too far depends on your frame of mind, I think. Also, you can get used to anything, given enough practice. My commute used to be 5km each way, then 8, then 27 (on the flat). Now, I guess it's what most people would consider punishment, but I couldn't be happier
If you consider your commute to be a trifecta of commuting, exercise and recreation, then it's easier to put up with a longer ride. Of course, that depends on your home situation and other factors affecting your spare time, but everyone needs a daily exercise routine of some sort, and a cycling commute is ideal for that.
For what it's worth, I don't cycle as a sport, either; I do plenty of km, but it's all commuting or recreation (or both at once
