I was riding along Hyde St Yarraville today, along the perfectly adequate road bike lane. I watched as a pushbike on the Westgate Link path had a near miss with a car at the corner of Hall St, he rode on and shook his head. So did I, but because he didn't even realise that he did not have the right of way. Unfortunately the Westgate Link in this section is nothing more than a tarted up footpath with a white line down the middle. At every single corner on this section, there is no give way sign and no obligation for a car to stop for you. Even the side roads which had a raised concrete path put across (imagine a speed hump with a bike lane across the top of it) still don't have a give way sign. The pretty yellow signs at these humps simply advise of a speed limit and an advisory 20km/h.
It really irritates me. The path gives the appearance of giving cyclists some sort of right to cross but doesn't. Don't get caught out people, you'll be flattened and at fault
At least on the road bike lane, I'm protected by the give way sign.
