I've recently changed from working just 7km from home to now travelling to the CBD 5 days a week. I've done the Werribee-CBD commute a couple of times on the bike, but am now looking to step things up majorly and get back on the bike a lot more often. I'm a bit lost as to exactly how to best go about it though.
Checked out the bike parking at work and was really impressed with the facilities. Secure parking...yep, showers....yep, a permanent locker....2 year waiting list...doh. This really killed my initial idea of riding 2 days a week and seeing how things went before moving up to 3 or 4 days.
So now I'm considering BikePark (very close to my office), but with the cost it's not financially viable for me unless I ride 4 or even 5 days a week. No doubt this would be excellent for my health, fitness and enjoying the riding, but could leave me absolutely stuffed at work and missing time with my family.
Bikes are something I'm thinking about a lot as well. At the moment I have an Apollo MTB and a Fuji roadie. I could put panniers on my MTB and carry my work stuff and clothes back and forward each day, negating the need for a locker and letting me drop back to 2-3 days a week...but the MTB is a pretty heavy bastard and I can see this really hammering me after just a few days. I don't have any clip in pedals and don't really want to spend any cash doing up the MTB. Would much rather enjoy the ride on my Fuji, but that will mean carrying a backpack which can be heavyish at times (no laptops or anything like that, just a wife who cooks awesome lunches...). The other option I'm considering is buying a new commuter bike (probably a Fuji around the $500 mark) and getting panniers set up on that along with MTB shoes and pedals, high quality lights (sometimes work 1pm-9pm) etc. This would again let me do just 2-3 days a week and the new bike could be covered by my upcoming birthday, but then I miss out on some other (non-cycling) stuff I've been really hanging out for.
Anyway overall I'm enjoying thinking about all the options (hey...any of them equal more riding
)but I'm a bit scrambled and keep changing my mind 2-3 times a day. What would you do in this situation?
Right now I'm leaning towards a BikePark membership and 4-5 days a week on the roadie with the odd day here and there on the train to bring clothes back and forth (having a casual dress code at work helps stretch this out).
I'm excited about the challenge of approx 350-400km commuting each week (last year I set myself the goal of going from not having ridden since high school to getting fit enough to do GVBR, and have felt a real lack of motivation since reaching this goal) but am pretty nervous about how much energy I'll have left for work and my family (wife and 9 month old daughter). I'm nowhere near fit, but have done enough riding to have gotten through Gran Fondo, 135km ATB and GVBR.
Brain dump complete....thoughts appreciated
