I am curious to know what others viewpoint is on a problem that I have with my commuter, more to the point, the wheelset.
On the commute yesterday I broke the 3rd rear axle on my Mavic Crossrides (bought in 2008).
The first 2 times I only found out about it when the bike was serviced - they advised me that the quick-release skewer was what was taking the load/holding the rear wheel in place.
Yesterday the rear skewer also broke which meant the wheel fell forward and rubbed against the chainstay (i think that's the right name for it) - luckily all at low speed.
I bought the wheelset back in 2008 - and the first time it happened was around 12-18 months - not knowing any better, I was told it would cost to replace, so I paid it (it should have been a warranty claim) - and I thought 'problem solved'.
So it happened again about 6 months ago when the bike was serviced - which i told the workshop "i've already paid for a replacement, what's the deal?' - they said they would warranty it and I was on my way.
I'm 85kg, and my pannier load is max 10kg. I run Schwalbe Marathon Plus pumped up pretty hard (within recommendations) - there is no off-road riding nor any stunts or jumps either - I take care of my bike!
I spoke with the store manager at BSC bikes today (QV Store) who said they would not warranty and "i must be doing something to it" - and it mustn't be a manufacturing defect as it keeps on happening. My view is the axle in these entry level mavics are obviously a bit cheap - and not up to daily commuting.
I spent at the time over $500 on the wheelset (bought also from BSC Bikes) which was quite a significant amount to me considering i got the whole bike (GT Avalanche 2.0 disc) for around $750.
I was assured 'these wheels are strong as and wont give you any hassles' - which is not the case.
So I'm curious to know what other riders, especially commuters think of this? I was also told that 'i should think myself lucky' for getting 3 years out of them - which I thought was a bit off.
I'll probably upgrade to something better, but I still want to get these useable again - what are the bv forumers view on this situation?
